B2V Command Line Guide to VMware ESX Server 4 (vSphere)
Last Updated 21st May 2009 by Alistair Sutherland

This guide has been compiled by the consultants & trainers at Taupo Consulting and is based upon their personal experiences with the VMware ESX Server 4 (vSphere) product through the beta process and now in production! For more information about Taupo Consulting, please click here. We update when we can and do appreciate suggestions. The information in this guide is not verified or sanctioned by VMware Inc. and we encourage our website visitors to use www.vmware.com as their primary source of VMware product information. We are of course delighted if you find our shared experience documented in this guide of use in your environment and always appreciate being linked to.

ESX Server 4 is the core component of VMware vSphere and is generally available as of 21st May 2009. For the moment, we are attempting to present this page only containing the new commands in vSphere, so it's a delta guide. In time, we will make this guide as complete as we can so you don't need to flip between 2 guides to get all the content.

If you are using ESX server 3.x, you can click here for the command line guide to ESX 3.x

  esxcli

  esxcfg-volume
This welcome addition to the ESX commands allows us to work easily with snapshot storage volumes without getting confused about settings like DisallowSnapshotLUN=yes.

The esxcfg-volume command switch lists the volumes when used with the -l switch

  esxcfg-addons

  esxcfg-mpath
Ok, the command itself is not new, we've had this one for a while; however, what has changed is how we address storage volumes.
